Hopi Ear Candles
History of Hopi Ear Candling
Ear Candling
(also know as Thermal Auricular Therapy) is an ancient and
natural therapy handed down by many different civilisations
including the peoples of Asia, Egypt, Ancient Greece and the native
North and South American Indians. However, the practice reached the
modern world via the native American Hopi Indians of North Arizona.
Ear candles were used traditionally by Shamen healers. Ancient wall
paintings show their importance in initiation rituals and healing
ceremonies of the tribe. Candles are still made today on the basis
of the old traditional formula originating from the Hopi Indians.
Ear candles are long hollow tubes made of cotton linen, pure
beeswax, extract of honey, some traditional herbs such as Sage and
Chamomile and pure essential oils. When used in practice in the UK
these must have a filter within them and comply with EU regulation
93/42/EEC.
A Hopi Ear
Candling Treatment
You will be asked
to lie on alternate sides whilst the treatment is carried out. The
candle is lit then gently placed a little way into the ear. It is
then held upright by the practitioner and allowed to burn down. You
should experience a pleasant crackling sound and a warm comfortable
feeling as the candle burns. The candles work using a light suction
action (the chimney effect) and the movement of the flame creates a
vibration of the air in the candle which massages the eardrum. When
the candle has burned down it is taken away and a cotton bud is used
to remove any residue in the outer ear. A few drops of oil are
applied and the ear is gently massaged. The same process is then
repeated for the other ear. Both ears are always treated. Once both
ears are treated the client is given a facial massage and sinus
drain in order to facilitate the healing process. Most clients find
the whole experience very relaxing. Some even fall asleep during
treatment.
Ear Candling is a
safe, gentle and relaxing treatment which induces a pleasant feeling
of warmth and a balance of pressure in the ears, forehead and
sinuses. It can be
used by both
adults and children and can be a stress and pain free alternative to
syringing.

Reactions to Hopi
Ear Candling
As every client's
emotional and physical condition is different so their reaction to
Hopi Ear Candling can vary. Some people may not notice any reaction
at all, however, it is not unusual for you to experience any of the
following. These effects are only temporary and will subside.
 |
Increase in urination - due to stimulation of the
circulation.
|
 |
Increased thirst - as a result of the increased
urination.
|
 |
Changes in bowel movements - due to the stimulation of
the Parasympathetic Nervous System.
|
 |
Headaches or feeling light headed - due to increased
circulation and elimination of toxins. Drinking water
after a treatment will normally prevent these symptoms
occurring.
|
 |
Increased mucous from nasal passages
|
 |
Feeling of tiredness which is often followed by feeling
revitalised
|
 |
Hearing may be temporarily impaired, in the same way as
it is following use of oil ear drops that hydrate
impacted wax. More treatments may be required to loosen
the wax before it is expelled naturally.

Aftercare Advice
When you have
received a Hopi Ear Candle treatment there are certain things that
you are advised to do afterwards. This is to help you to gain the
maximum benefit from your treatment.
First and
foremost, take a little time out to relax and rest.
Over the next 24
- 48 hours:
 |
Increase your fluid intake with water, herbal
teas/infusions or fresh juices. This is to keep the body
hydrated and assist in the process of waste removal.
|
 |
It is
advisable to avoid water or swimming for at least 2 days
following the treatment.
|
 |
Avoid
cold winds or draughts if possible. Very occasionally
the ears can feel a little more sensitive the day
following the treatment.
|
 |
Cut
down on the amount of caffeine and alcohol consumed as
these have a diuretic effect on the body and also
increase the toxicity levels.
|
General Advice:
 |
Never
poke at the ears with cotton buds, or any other
instruments, as you may damage the eardrum.
|
 |
Reduce intake of dairy products if you suffer from sinus
problems as these create excess mucous in the body.
